Surprisingly, Nintendo has been one of the more innovative companies as far as hardware goes of late. The examples I can clearly think of are not only this controller but the infmaous Duck Hunt gun for the NES system, the first truely "ergonomically pleasing" controller with the SNES system and the Microphone, used for voice recognition in a few GameCube games. As much complaining people do about Nintendo, they certainly aren't afraid to be the first to try something new.
